Mt. Vernon, OH - The Geneva College women′s volleyball team has been on quite a roll. It pushed the current win streak to 12 straight on Friday night with a pair of victories in pool play at the NCCAA Eastern Regional tournament. A pair of 3-0 victories over Houghton and Roberts Wesleyan pushed the Golden Tornadoes into Saturday′s semi-final round against host Mt. Vernon Nazarene. The wins moved Geneva′s overall record to 24-7 and just two shy of last year′s school record for victories in a season.

The doubleheader sweep came one day after Geneva finished up work in the Presidents′ Athletic Conference with a 17-1 record. The Golden Tornadoes will host the 2011 PAC semi-finals next Friday at Metheny Fieldhouse.

This weekend, however, is relegated to the NCCAA and the chance to qualify for the national tournament for the first time in school history. The Golden Tornadoes are now just two wins away from doing just that.

In the first match of the day, Geneva defeated Houghton in three straight sets by scores of 25-17, 25-11, 25-8. Kristland McCracken picked up a team best 12 kills while Rachel Kuegler added seven kills and Maggie Bowersox finished with six kills and five blocks. Paige Banyas had three service aces and ten digs in the victory. Deanna Briody continued her strong season with 30 assists.

In the night cap, Geneva again won in three straight but it was not nearly as easy with game scores of 25-23, 25-21, 25-21. Briody finished that match with 34 assists while Brianna Mixter had a game high 34 digs. Offensively, Bowersox threw down 12 kills with 0 hitting errors and Erin Smith had seven kills without an error. McCracken and Ashley Davis each picked up seven kills in match number two.

Geneva will play host Mt. Vernon at noon on Saturday with the winner advancing to the regional finals at 3 pm against the winner of Roberts Wesleyan and Malone. The regional champion will advance to the NCCAA national tournament in Florida in December.
