Beaver Falls, PA - Protecting the basketball is one of the main themes for head coach Lori Wynn and the Geneva College women′s basketball team. So far in 2011, the Golden Tornadoes have struggled in that area and on Saturday the turnover bug jumped up and bit them yet again. Geneva turned the ball over 30 times in a 54-40 loss to Carlow University as the Golden Tornadoes dropped to 1-3 on the young season.
Geneva led by three points on four separate occasions in the first half but could not extend that lead at any point. The Celtics continued to pressure Geneva and forced 20 first half turnovers on their way to a 28-19 halftime lead. Carlow slowly built upon that lead early in the second half and led by as many as 17 points 43-26 with over eight minutes left to play. Geneva could not cut the lead into double digits the rest of the way and fell for the third straight game.
In one of the more amazing statistics of the season, Geneva attempted only two foul shots for the game and came away 0-2 from the line. Carlow made just five foul shots but converted on five more field goals than did the Golden Tornadoes. Chelsea D′Urso provided the hot hand for Geneva with 16 points as the only Golden Tornado player to reach double figures. Beth DeLuca scored seven points and added a team best eight rebounds in the loss. Erin DiSanti led Carlow with 16 points while teammates Chanel Berry and Jessaln Timko each scored 12 points.
The Golden Tornadoes open Presidents′ Athletic Conference play at home next Wednesday night when they welcome 17th ranked and defending conference champion Thomas More to Metheny Field House for a 5:30 pm tip-off.
