Pittsburgh, PA - The Geneva College women′s basketball team was hoping to end the trend of splitting season series′ with Chatham University on Saturday afternoon. For the last four years, the two schools have split the season series and the Golden Tornadoes missed a chance to sweep the Cougars following a 40-38 loss in Pittsburgh. The loss was Geneva′s eighth straight overall as the Golden Tornadoes fell to 3-18 overall including a 2-12 record in the PAC. As for Chatham, the Cougars ended a 13-game conference losing streak and moved to 4-17 overall and 1-13 in league play.
Neither team could get much offense generated throughout the afternoon. By halftime, Chatham took a 19-18 lead into the locker room. Geneva′s largest lead was four points in the first half and it was never able to take a second half advantage. The teams did tie on two occasions in the second half with the last one coming at the 10:03 mark with the score 27-27 following a Samantha Fisher lay-up. The Golden Tornadoes did have a chance down the stretch to tie the game but Beth DeLuca missed a pair of free throws with eight seconds left on the clock and Geneva never got another shot opportunity. Geneva only committed 15 turnovers in the game, which is ten less than its season average. However, the Golden Tornadoes could not find the basket with any regularity. Geneva shot just 31% from the field for the game and went 4-16 from three-point range.
Beth DeLuca led the Golden Tornadoes with 16 points while teammate Samantha Fisher added 12 points. Lizz King and Marguerite Sargent each scored 12 to lead the Cougars.
Geneva will get its final chance for a season sweep on Wednesday night when it hosts Thiel College in a rematch of a game that the Golden Tornadoes won in Greenville earlier this year by the score of 57-56.
