Beaver Falls, PA – It took late game heroics in both ends of Friday′s doubleheader but the Geneva College baseball team prevailed with a home opening day sweep over Houghton College. The Golden Tornadoes used a late home run to take game one 2-0 before rallying to overcome a six-run deficit in a 7-6 victory in the night cap. The sweep pushed Geneva′s overall record to 7-5.

Mike Jeffreys was cruising along on the mound for the Golden Tornadoes in game one. In fact, Jeffreys did not allow a hit until the sixth inning. The sophomore ended up pitching a two-hit shut-out following a dramatic home run to give Geneva the lead. The Golden Tornadoes could not generate any offense of its own for most of game one. Geneva had just two hits through five innings of a scoreless tie. In the sixth after one out, Mike Suluva came up with a base hit that was followed by a two-run home run off the bat of Joel Gatti. Gatti′s blast proved to be the difference in a 2-0 final. Suluva has two of Geneva′s four hits in game one.

The Golden Tornadoes dug themselves an even bigger hole in game two. Geneva spotted Houghton six runs and trailed 6-0 heading into the final inning. The Golden Tornadoes posted seven runs in the bottom of the seventh and came away with the victory on the strength of a two-run walk-off single from T.J. Lambert. Geneva had just three hits in the seven-run inning and took advantage of an error with two outs that could have ended the game. Geneva had six hits in the game including a pair from Lambert. Caleb Kilgore started and went four innings for Geneva and got a no-decision. Cody Holbrook picked up the victory in relief with three innings of work and allowing no earned runs.

Geneva and Houghton will complete the four-game series with a doubleheader at 33rd Street Field on Saturday at noon.
