Greenville, PA - The Geneva College baseball team dipped below the .500 mark on Friday after dropping a 13-6 decision to Thiel College in Presidents′ Athletic Conference play. The Golden Tornadoes fell to 10-11 overall including a 4-5 mark in the league. Geneva′s saw an early lead disappear as the Tomcats put 13 runs and 15 hits on the board in the victory. The Golden Tornadoes′ offense matched those 15 hits, but was unable to overcome a ten-run deficit midway the game.
Thiel opened the scoring with single runs in the second and third innings off of Geneva starter Tad Forsythe. The Golden Tornadoes cut the lead in half with a run in the fourth and then took their only lead of the game with a pair in the fifth. The lead was short-lived as the Tomcats posted four runs in the bottom of the fifth and put things away with a seven spot in the sixth. Geneva tried to comeback with three runs in the final two innings but the lead was too much to overcome.
Joel Gatti picked up an RBI single in the fourth to get Geneva on the board. In the fifth, Jeremy Herzog knocked in a pair of runs on a single to give the Golden Tornadoes their only lead of the game. Late in the contest, Garrett Swanson picked up an RBI on an infield single and T.J. Lamberts two-run double in the ninth closed out the scoring. Lambert and Mike Jeffreys each had three hits with Herzog and Gatti picking up two each. Forsythe was handed the loss after allowing six earned runs on eight hits in 4.1 innings of work. Geneva′s bullpen surrendered seven earned runs in 3.2 innings of action.
Geneva will have a chance for some quick revenge as the Golden Tornadoes will host Thiel in a PAC doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at 1 pm.
