Ft. Pierce, FL - The Florida trip couldn′t have ended any better for the Geneva College baseball team. Playing its final two games of the southern swing, the Golden Tornadoes completed a three-game series with Bethany by sweeping a doubleheader from the Bison to move to 5-5 overall and 2-1 in conference play.

Geneva defeated Bethany 7-3 in game one behind a complete game victory from Mike Jeffreys. Jeffreys went seven innings and allowed only three hits, three earned runs with six strikeouts. The Golden Tornadoes banged out ten hits in the opener. Jeremy Herzog, Ryan McGonigle and TJ Lambert each had two hits to pace the offense. After spotting Bethany a 2-0 first inning lead, the Golden Tornadoes rallied back with two runs in the third, fifth and seventh innings. McConigle picked up an RBI single in the third to spark a two-run rally and then came up with a two-run single in the fifth to extend Geneva′s lead. Herzog and Adam Scheiderer provided Geneva with insurance RBI′s in the seventh.

Bethany looked poised to salvage a split as it took a 6-1 lead into the sixth inning. The Golden Tornadoes tied the game with five runs in the frame highlighted by a bases clearing double by Scheiderer that tied the score. After Bethany regained the lead, Geneva scored two more in the seventh thanks to a throwing error and a bases loaded hit by pitch that proved to be the difference. Geneva′s 11-hit attack was helped by four hits each from Scheiderer and McConigle. On the mound, Caleb Kilgore went the distance to earn a hard fought victory after allowing seven runs on nine hits.

Geneva returns home for the home opener on Friday when it hosts Houghton in a 2 pm doubleheader in the first of four games against the Highlanders next weekend.
