Geneva College students recently participated in a variety of community service jobs for “Our Town,” which was organized by the Geneva College Student Union (GCSU).

“The GCSU has stated that one of their primary objectives is 'to provide service for both the Geneva community and the larger surrounding community,'” says Brian Jensen, Director of Student Leadership Development. “Our Town is not only a way for the GCSU to accomplish this objective, but a beautiful way for these students to show the Beaver Falls community that they care about their neighbors.”

The day began at 9 a.m. in the Brig with coffee from Beaver Falls Coffee and Tea (BFC&T) and Oram's donuts. Over 50 students participated, working at various sites including Beaver County Christian School (BCCS), Pine Valley Bible Camp, Tiger Pause, Habitat for Humanity and Geneva's sand volleyball court.

Director of the Career Development Center Robert Rostoni led the BCCS project, which involved improving the frequently-used playground and its surrounding area. Students removed mud obstructions, put gravel underneath the swings, and added railroad ties and mulch under the playground. Creation Care, a student-led group on campus, built gardens to enhance the visual appeal of the area.

“The students did a great job,” says Rostoni. “There are a lot of faculty and staff members' children who attend BCCS, so this event blessed both the Geneva and BCCS communities.”

Students who assisted at Pine Valley Bible Camp started preparing the location for winter by chopping firewood, as well as moving outdoor furniture and clearing brush.

The sand volleyball court on campus received a much-needed surface improvement. Volunteers spread several tons of new sand and cleared the parallel hillside of tree stumps and brush.

The GCSU will be organizing another Our Town for the spring semester.
