Beaver Falls, PA - The Geneva College men′s basketball team opened the 2012-13 campaign with an 88-79 loss to Penn State Fayette on the first night of Geneva′s Coaches vs. Cancer Tip-Off Tournament. The Golden Tornadoes, who are coming off a 6-19 season a year ago, dropped their season opener for the first time in eight years.

The Golden Tornadoes and Lions seesawed back and forth in the first half with Geneva holding a four-point lead as its biggest advantage of the night. At the half, Penn State took a 40-37 lead into the locker room. The Lions never took the lead into double figures in the second half but led by as many as nine on three separate occasions. Geneva′s final lead of the game came at the 16:43 mark when it took a 45-43 advantage. PS-Fayette grabbed a 46-43 lead one minute later and never trailed the rest of the game.

Despite the loss, Geneva′s Matt Lorello, who led Geneva in scoring a year ago, picked up where he left off with a team best 31 points on 13-20 shooting from the field. Lorello was the only Geneva player to score in double figures. Meanwhile, the Lions posted a balanced attack that featured five players in double figures led by Brandon Cunningham′s 21 points. David Winns also checked in with 20 points in the victory.

PS-Fayette shot 65% from the field in the first half and finished the game shooting 58% from the field as a team. Meanwhile, Geneva shot 47% from the field but was only 5-25 from three-point range.

The Golden Tornadoes will face Pitt-Greensburg in day two of the Tip-off Tournament on Saturday at 3 pm.
