Houghton, NY - It was not the script that Geneva women′s basketball coach Lori Wynn was hoping to write for the opening weekend of the 2012-13 season. Coming off an opening season loss to Pitt-Bradford on Friday, the Golden Tornadoes dropped a 45-40 decision to Penn State Greater Allegheny on Saturday morning on day two of the Houghton College tournament. It was Geneva′s first ever loss to PSGA in six games.

Much like Friday night, the Golden Tornadoes could not recover from a slow start on Saturday. Geneva managed just 11 first half points on Saturday and shot 3-25 from the field in the first 20 minutes. PSGA took a 25-11 lead into the halftime locker room.

The Golden Tornadoes were much more efficient on offense in the second half and outscored the Lions 29-20 in the final 20 minutes but it wasn′t enough. Geneva took a pair of one-point leads down the stretch and when Samantha Fisher made one of two free throws with three minutes on the clock, Geneva had tied PSGA at 38-38. The Lions scored the next five points in the game and never trailed again.

For the game, Geneva shot 24% from the field while PSGA was not much better at 33%. The Golden Tornadoes did do a good job in protecting the basketball and only committed 11 turnovers. On the score sheet, Samantha Fisher was Geneva′s lone player in double figures with 12 points while Bri Cowden chipped in with seven points. Taylor Fulton led all scorers as she led the Lions to the victory with 22 points in the game.

Geneva will return home for the opener at Metheny Fieldhouse on Tuesday to face cross-town rival Penn State Beaver at 7 pm.
