Beaver Falls, PA - Less than 24 hours after dropping the season opener to Penn State-Fayette, the Geneva College men′s basketball team suffered an even bigger heartbreak on Saturday. After battling back from as many as seven points down in the final five minutes of regulation, Geneva watched the Bobcats tip in the game winner with 0.1 seconds on the clock. The loss dropped Geneva to 0-2 on the season while Pitt-Greensburg swept its weekend′s games and has started 2-0 in 2012-13.
Geneva led by as many as nine points in the first half when it took a 15-6 lead just six minutes into the game. Pitt-Greensburg battled back and by the end of the first half took a 40-35 lead into the break. The Bobcats led by as many as ten early in the second half and took a 68-61 lead with 4:58 left in the second half. Geneva battled back in the final minute Trailing 75-72, Jordan Harbison knocked down a three-point field goal to tie the game with five seconds left on the clock. UPG hustled the ball down the floor and after a missed short jump shot, UPG′s David Palmer tipped in the game winner as time expired.
Palmer finished the game with 18 points and nine rebounds with 16 of those points coming in the second half. Palmer had 18 points and 20 rebounds on Friday night and was named the Tip-Off tournament MVP. Geneva was once again led by senior Matt Lorello. Lorello followed his 31 point performance on Friday with 26 points in the loss on Saturday. Harbison finished with 14 points and Pat Johnson added 12 for the Golden Tornadoes. Lorello was named to the All-Tournament team along with Pitt-Grensburg′s Brian Heinle, who posted 18 points in the victory.
Pitt-Greensburg shot 51% from the field for the game while Geneva shot 40%. The Golden Tornadoes knocked down six three-point field goals including four from Harbison that included the game tying three-pointer with five seconds left in regulation.
Geneva will seek its first win of the new season on Tuesday when it takes the trip across town to battle Penn State Beaver. The Golden Tornadoes will not return home until a November 26th meeting with Allegheny College at 7:30 pm.
