Bethany, WV - When you go into the week looking for your first victory of the season on the road against the conference pre-season favorite it is not a good feeling. The Golden Tornadoes did more than hang around as they gave Bethany College a solid fight on Wednesday night but ultimately came up on the short end of a 75-62 decision. The loss dropped Geneva to 0-7 on the season including a 0-2 in conference play.

Geneva held Bethany to only nine first half field goals as it headed the locker room trailing the Bison by just four points at 30-26. The Bison found their shooting touch in the second half and shot 50% from the field in outscoring Geneva 45-36 in the final stanza. Neither team was very effective from long range with identical 4-20 marks from outside the arc. Bethany hit the offensive glass very hard and outrebounded Geneva 45-40 for the game. Bethany′s Skylar Williams pulled down 19 rebounds including nine on the offensive end of the court. In the scoring column, it was the Bison′s James Barton that stole the show with 27 points on 10-17 shooting from the field.

Geneva was led by Matt Lorello′s 17 points. Pat Johnson scored 13 before fouling out and Zac Rorick was a perfect 5-5 from the line in scoring 12 points off the bench.

Geneva got within three points once early in the second half but never made a real threat at the Bison down the stretch. With 3:40 remaining in regulation, Nick Miller canned a three-pointer that pulled Geneva to within five points at 61-56 but that was as close as Geneva would get until the final minute of the game.

The schedule does not get any easier for the Golden Tornadoes as they head to Ohio on Thursday night to take on Division I Youngstown State in a coaches reunion of sorts as former Geneva head coach Jerry Slocum, now with YSU, will take on his former assistant and 16-year head coach Jeff Santarsiero with Geneva. The Golden Tornadoes return to Metheny Fieldhouse on Saturday night for the conference home opener against Waynesburg at 7:30 pm.
