Berea, OH - It didn′t take long for the Geneva College track team to post national qualifying numbers in 2013. The Golden Tornadoes opened the indoor track and field season on Friday evening at Baldwin-Wallace. Four student-athletes qualified for the NCCAA national meet in just their first performances of the new season. On the men′s side, Nick Edinger qualified in the mile with a finishing time that was just two seconds off of the school record. Ryan White also nearly put his name in the record book as he qualified in the 55 meter event with a finishing time that was just 0.03 seconds off the record. In women′s action, Sarah-Noel Meek and Alayna Merkle each posted qualifying times in the 3000 meter race.

Edinger picked up where he left off a year ago with another solid outing in the season opener. He finished third overall in a race that was decided by less than two seconds between the top three runners. Edinger′s time of 4:30.83 was good enough to finish third sandwiched between four runners from John Carroll. Ryan White′s time of 6.92 in the 55-meter race finals placed him fifth overall and just missing Geneva′s school record. In other men′s action, Jacob Mellinger and White each turned in top ten finishes in the 200 meter race while Chez Anderson finished fourth in the 500 meter event.

The women′s team′s top highlight came in the 3000 meter event with Meek and Merkle finishing fourth and sixth respectively with times of 11:05.51 and 11:13.52. The only top ten finishes for the women came in the shot put where Sara Williams (34-06.25) finished fifth and teammate Kayla Jackson (34-00.75) finished seventh.

The Golden Tornadoes will take a full team to Mount Union for their next meet on February 2nd.
