Washington, PA - The defense for the Geneva College baseball team had been fairly solid through the first 12 non-conference games of the 2013 season. As the Presidents′ Athletic Conference opened on Friday, the defense didn′t hold up against Washington & Jefferson and it proved costly in a doubleheader loss to the Presidents. Geneva dropped game one 10-0 before falling 3-1 in the night cap. The loss dropped Geneva′s overall record to 5-9 including a 0-2 start in conference action.

Ian Macdonald drew the start on the mound in game one and was the victim of some untimely errors in the first two innings. Geneva committed a total of five errors in game one and it turned into four unearned runs in the second inning. W & J posted a pair of runs in the first inning and five more in the second inning to take control of the game. Doug Sanson pitched four innings of relief for Geneva and allowed just two earned runs during his outing. The Geneva offense could only manage three hits in game one and was unable to mount much of an offensive threat.

Game two was a much different story as All-Conference hurler Mike Jeffreys took the hill for the Golden Tornadoes. After falling behind 1-0 in the third inning, JC Ackerman′s RBI ground out in the fourth tied the game at 1-1. Another error to open the fourth inning opened the door for a pair of unearned runs for W & J which proved to be the difference in the loss. Geneva had some scoring chances in the game including a second inning rally that featured bases loaded and no outs that did not result in any runs. Geneva picked up only three more hits in the night cap and could not rally back from the two run deficit.

Jeffreys went the distance for Geneva and allowed one earned run on three hits with five strikeouts but was handed the hard luck loss.

Geneva will open the home portion of its conference schedule on Saturday when W & J visits Beaver Falls for a single, nine-inning game scheduled to begin at noon. The Golden Tornadoes will have a three-game series with Saint Vincent next Tuesday and Wednesday and will play three against Thiel next weekend.
