The recently formed Geneva College Advancement Board (GCAB) has issued a "March Matchness" challenge for its first fundraising effort. To spur giving, members of the GCAB have committed to matching donations made to the Geneva Fund in the month of March up to $50,000.
The "March Matchness" theme was chosen to complement Geneva′s identification as the first college to organize a basketball game, which took place in 1893. The appeal has the potential to raise $100,000 for Geneva and the students within the span of one month. Word on the event will be spread via emails, postcards and Phonathon calls.
Established by the Board of Trustees to strengthen financial support for the college, the GCAB will also focus long-term on capital projects, with an emphasis on campus renovation and beautification. The group will also support academic programs and student scholarships.
"My story is much like many alumni," Dwight Wagner ′68, CEO of U.S. Commercial Realty and the Chair of the Advancement Board, explains. "During a spontaneous campus visit, I was reminded of how important Geneva is to me, and I felt drawn to help and to ask others to provide financial support. And since that visit, I′ve encountered meaningful ways to ‘give back′ to Geneva for all it has given me."
The GCAB, which met for the first time during the 2012 Homecoming weekend 2012, already boasts six other members: Robert Clarke ′67, retired President and CEO of Memorial Health System; Katharine (McMillan ′72) Dennis, Senior Director of Development, Major and Principal Gifts at the University of Kentucky Medical Center; David Howell ′82, Senior Vice President, Nuclear Automation at Westinghouse′s Nuclear Services division; Raymond Lipps ′82, Senior Director, Global IT Security; Stanley Omland ′79, President of Omland Engineering Associates; and R. Duane Sofia, Ph.D. ′64, Pharmaceutical & Biotechnology Inc. Consultant.

"Like you, they have chosen to use their gifts to bless others by supporting Geneva′s mission of providing students an intellectually challenging, spiritually transformative education. The college depends on this type of generosity, so please pray that ‘March Matchness′ will inspire many others to join with you in investing in Christian higher education at Geneva College."
