Beaver Falls, PA - The weather cooperated with Geneva College and Penn State Beaver as the two teams hooked up for the Golden Tornadoes′ home opener. What began as a doubleheader added to the schedule just yesterday, the twin-bill turned into an offensive showcase that resulted in a doubleheader split. Game one became an instant classic that saw Geneva fall to the Lions 18-17. The second game went just six innings because of darkness with the Golden Tornadoes rallying for five late runs to salvage a split by the score of 5-4.

The Golden Tornadoes banged out 15 hits in game one and did all it could offensively to steal the game from a Penn State team that opened the game with four runs in the first inning. The two teams see-sawed their way through seven innings with the Lions taking an 18-13 lead into the final stanza. Geneva rallied for four runs and left the bases loaded when the last out was recorded. Aaron Witman collected three hits as one of five Geneva players to collect multiple hits including Andy Santana, Tyler Damazo, TJ Lambert and Jeremy Herzog. Geneva came back after Penn State opened up that 4-0 lead to tie the score and eventually take a 10-9 lead but the bullpen for Geneva couldn′t hold the lead in the late innings.

The Lions opened up a four-run lead in the night cap and led 4-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth. A four-run rally highlighted by RBI hits from Brett Hutira and Andy Santana pulled Geneva into a 4-4 tie. With the light diminishing, the Golden Tornadoes picked up the game winning run in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single from Dan Jeffreys. Ian Macdonald went four innings for Geneva and Caleb Kilgore picked up the victory with two scoreless innings of relief.

Geneva will host Medialle College on Tuesday in a home doubleheader beginning at 1:30 pm.
