Ft. Pierce, FL - The Geneva College baseball team opened the 2013 season on Saturday with a doubleheader split against Massachusetts Maritime College. The Golden Tornadoes attempted comeback in game one came up short in a 14-8 loss prior to the Golden Tornadoes taking the night cap by the count of 6-1.

Game one featured a 10 hit attack from the Golden Tornadoes but it wasn′t enough to overcome a large deficit from earlier in the game. Geneva watched Massachusetts Maritime jump out to a 9-1 lead after a huge six-run rally in the second inning. The Golden Tornadoes battled their way back into the game with seven unanswered runs including a five-run rally of their own in the fourth inning. A five-run seventh proved to be Geneva′s undoing in game one.

Tyler Damazo led the offense with a perfect 3-3 game while Mike Jeffreys and Garrett Swanson each had a pair of hits. Caleb Kilgore did a great job in relief with 4.2 innings while allowing just one earned run as the Golden Tornadoes mounted their comeback.

In the nightcap, Geneva picked up 10 more hits but this time the offense was more than enough. Ian Macdonald pitched five innings and picked up the victory in his Geneva debut as Mike Jeffreys came on to close things out with five strikeouts against the six batters he faced. Macdonald allowed just one earned run and four hits in his debut.

The offense got clicking with a run in the first inning and five more in the first five innings. JC Ackerman, Jeffreys and Aaron Witman each picked up two hits in the victory. Geneva got at least one hit from seven different players in the night cap.

Geneva will take its 1-1 record into action on Monday when it faces Martin Luther College for a doubleheader set to begin at 3 pm.
