Kissimmee, FL - For the first ten games of the 2013 season, the Geneva College softball team was forced to rely on its offensive prowess to try to out score teams. On Monday, the Golden Tornadoes got a pair of pitching gems from the same right arm. Unfortunately, Geneva was only able to take advantage of one of those gems for a split on the final day of its Florida trip. The Golden Tornadoes opened the day with a 5-1 victory over Transylvania before dropping a 1-0 heart breaker to Mt. Union in the night cap. The split moved Geneva′s overall record to 4-8 heading out of Florida.

Samantha Johnson was nothing short of spectacular for Geneva on Monday. The freshman took the circle for both ends of the doubleheader and allowed just seven hits in 13 innings of work. Transylvania scored one unearned runs on three hits while striking out five times. While Johnson was busy mowing down batters, fellow freshman Dayna Hicks was etching her name in the Geneva record book. Hicks went 3-4 in game one with two runs scored. She tied a school record with five stolen bases in the game and kept her streak alive with 19 consecutive steals. She would extend that streak to 20 with another stolen base in game two. Christina Fuqua also had a pair of hits in Geneva′s eight-hit attack in game one.

Johnson was equally as effective in game two by allowing just one unearned run on four hits while striking out seven. An unearned run by Mt. Union in the fourth inning proved to be the difference. Geneva out hit the Purple Raiders seven to four but left the bases loaded in the seventh inning Fuqua and Lori Deem each had two hits in the night cap.

Geneva is headed back to Beaver Falls where it will begin the northern portion of its schedule on Saturday at Point Park at 1 pm. The Golden Tornadoes′ home opener will be next Tuesday against Baldwin-Wallace at 3 pm.
