Beaver Falls, PA - For the third time this week, the Geneva College softball team split a conference doubleheader. On Saturday, the Golden Tornadoes defeated Washington & Jefferson 9-4 in game one before dropping a 12-5 decision in the night cap. The split was good enough for Geneva to hang on to second place in the Presidents′ Athletic Conference with a 16-14 overall mark and a 10-4 record in league play.

After spotting W & J three first inning runs, Geneva came right back with three runs of its own in the bottom of the first. Geneva had just one hit and took advantage of a W & J error to tie the game. In the third inning, Ashley Davis launched her first home run of the season to give Geneva its first lead. Later in the inning, Brittany Clark came up with a two-run double followed by RBI hits from Dayna Hicks and Leah Prisuta to extend Geneva′s lead to 8-3. Davis struck again in the sixth inning with an RBI double to close out the scoring. Samantha Johnson picked up her 12th win of the season allowing just one earned run on four hits in the victory. Andrea Hinds pitched two perfect innings of relief to close out the game.

Game two was all W & J early as the Presidents posted three runs in the first and second innings to take control of the game. Laura Beck tried to get Geneva back in the game with an RBI single in the third to dent the scoreboard. W & J exploded for five more runs in the fourth inning to open up a 12-1 lead before Geneva tried to make in interesting.

Christina Fuqua hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning which was followed by a Mackenzie Kemerer two-run double to cut the lead to 12-5 but Geneva couldn′t get any closer. Johnson was hit with the loss allowing three earned runs in two innings of work. Hinds allowed just one earned run on eight hits in four innings of relief.

Geneva heads to Kentucky next week for a meeting with Thomas More on Wednesday. The final home game will be Thursday against Penn State Beaver before closing out the regular season at Chatham next Saturday.
