After starting 3-0, Geneva suffers its first loss in double overtime to Carnegie Mellon 41-34 but remains 2-0 in the PAC.

Pittsburgh, PA - The Golden Tornadoes traveled into territory not seen for a long time this afternoon. Geneva took to the road for the first time in 2013 and came up on the short end of a 41-34 decision to fall to 3-1 on the season including a 2-0 mark in the PAC. While Saturday′s game was a non conference affair, CMU will join the PAC as a full fledged member in 2013.

On the edge of the seats, Geneva and fans entered overtime drama allotted by a late fourth quarter touchdown between quarterback Zack Hayward and Lemuel Fuller. Followed by a two point conversion by a Rocco Colavecchia rush, Geneva′s eight points were enough to take the Tartans into the first overtime period. After each team obtained touchdown in the first overtime period, Geneva and CMU entered the second round of overtime. Unable to match CMU′s touchdown, the GT′s experienced the season′s first loss while CMU collected their second win.

The Golden Tornadoes stormed out of the locker room and down the field in a six-play, 69 yard drive that was capped by four yard pass from Hayward to Josh Guiser. Carnegie Mellon quickly answered with its own nine-play, 63 yard drive to the end zone.

In the second quarter Geneva sophomore kicker, Mike Gardner, made two field goals (30 yards and 24 yards). Despite the six points he threw up on the board for Geneva, CMU took the lead with two touchdowns for a halftime score of 21-13.

Third quarter mimicked the first as both teams drove the ball from one end to the other. Geneva entered the end zone first off a Hayward to Colavecchia 15 yard pass but failed for the extra two point conversation. Tartan quarterback, Rob Kalkstein found Bryce Pardoe for a one yard pass. Geneva kept Carnegie Mellon at six points blocking the extra point kick. Geneva, late in the fourth quarter, down eight points created a 70-yard, 10 play drive and completed the two point rush needed to enter overtime.

The Golden Tornadoes scored the first post regulation points with a three yard Colavecchia run and good Gardner kick (three-play, 25 yards). Matching Geneva, Kalkstein and Reinertsen connected for a three yard pass (seven-play, 25 yards) for a second dose of overtime. Carnegie Mellon started with the ball this time, again finding Geneva′s end zone with a Reinertsen six yard run and good extra point kick. Geneva unable to duplicate a touchdown dropped their first game on the road.

Next week, Geneva will hop back on the bus for another road game, this time a bit further to Thomas More starting at 1:30 p.m.
