Beaver Falls, PA - The Men′s Basketball program quickly put last season in the rear view mirror as it started the 2013-14 campaign with a dynamic 72-59 victory over Houghton College in the night cap of the Coaches vs. Cancer Tip-Off Tournament at Metheny Fieldhouse. The season opener win starts up the season with a 1-0 overall record.
The Golden Tornadoes grabbed the lead just five minutes into the contest and never relinquished that lead as they put together a solid team win. Geneva′s offseason effort to refine its defense game showed itself loud and clear as they limited the Houghton Highlanders to 59 points on the night and just 26.3% from beyond the arc. In a moderately back and forth first half, the Golden Tornadoes held control of the game with consistent team defense and positive and patient offensive possessions on their way to a 37-27 halftime lead. Senior Trevor York paced the Tornadoes in the paint with eight first half points while Jake Grim and Chaese Vaudrin added seven and six in the first frame respectively.
Geneva jumped out to a 17 point lead early in the second half and appeared on its way to a commanding victory before Houghton put together a run that trimmed the lead to four points with eight minutes left in the game. Fortunately for the Golden Tornadoes, Jordan Harbison started heating up and Geneva′s senior leadership took over. Geneva finished off the Highlanders in the final minutes to secure the 72-59 win.
During their seasoning opening win, the Golden Tornadoes forced 20 Houghton turnovers while only giving up the ball 12 times in the game. Harbison led Geneva with 16 points while Jake Grim contributed 12 points and five assists. Trevor York also had a solid game for the Golden Tornadoes while constructing the game′s only double-double (12 points and 10 rebounds).
The Golden Tornadoes look to build their first winning streak of the season as they face Valley Forge Christian College at 3pm on Saturday in the championship game of the Coaches vs. Cancer Tip-Off Tournament at Metheny Fieldhouse.
