wbb-10.jpgSteubenville, OH- The Geneva Women′s Basketball team clinched its first win of the season before closing out 2013 at Franciscan in a 58-46 final. The win raises Geneva′s overall record to 1-8, 0-3 in the Presidents′ Athletic Conference.

The GT′s found a consistent stride to pace the game in the first half of play. Geneva shot a 52% (13-25) from the field along with a 42% (3-7) outside the arc and hit five of six free throws for a 34-21 half time lead. Franciscan responded in the second half. With 3:42 remaining on the clock Franciscan had closed the gap to a three point game, trailing 47-44. Unwilling to let the win slip through its fingers, Geneva exploded with a nine point scoring streak to clinch the "W".

Geneva′s Lydia Steele, Mary Keen and Nicole Hyland all contributed four field goals against Franciscan. Hyland kept the defensive edge for the Golden Tornadoes with 12 defensive rebounds, 15 total rebounds over the Barons supported by Becca Sargent with nine. Heidi Mann took full advantage of fouls, making seven of eight free throws contributing to her 12 team high points.

The Golden Tornadoes pick up conference play at Waynesburg University on Saturday January 4th at 6 p.m. for the first tip-off of 2014.
