Waynesburg, PA- Geneva learned a hard lesson tonight; old habits die hard. Geneva finished the 2013 year on a high note with a win at Franciscan but fell to Waynesburg in tonight′s game 64-42. The loss tallies up Geneva′s ninth loss of the season with a 1-9 overall record, dropping 0-4 in the Presidents′ Athletic Conference.
The Golden Tornadoes grabbed an eight point lead to start out the game against the Yellow Jackets. Geneva held the edge until 11 minutes left in the half when Waynesburg tied the game 11-11. Geneva would run into shooting trouble while the Yellow Jackets widened the distance on the scoreboard from Geneva, ending the half 30-16 over the Golden Tornadoes.
The Golden Tornadoes found more of the basket in the second half shooting a 29 % from the field. Geneva also made two three-pointers and sank 10-13 free throws in the second half, increasing the points made from the first half (16) to the second by ten points (26). Despite the efforts of the Golden Tornadoes, the Yellow Jackets created distance as far as 28 points ending with a 22 point edge of the GT′s.
Freshman Nicole Hyland finished the night with high score of 16 supported by Heidi Mann with 11 and Marissa Heaney with eight. Hyland and Mann both finished with seven rebounds. Mann also gathered seven steals in the 21 turnovers by the Yellow Jackets.
Wednesday the Golden Tornadoes will visit Kentucky to take on the Thomas More Saints at 5:30 p.m.
