The 2014 Beaver County MATHCOUNTS competition was held at Geneva College once again. The event is part of a national mathematics program designed to allow sixth, seventh and eighth graders compete at the local, state and national levels. This year, MATHCOUNTS at Geneva had approximately 80 student competitors and close to 40 volunteers, including several of the college′s students.

"Our group has sponsored MATHCOUNTS in Beaver County for 28 years, since its inception," said David McCullough, the Beaver County Coordinator for the MATHCOUNTS program, a professional engineer and a member of the Beaver County Chapter of the Pennsylvania Society of Professional Engineers. "We have held the local program and competition at Geneva College for most all of those years."

Geneva College offers a $2,000 scholarship to the winner of the competition each year. As Dr. David Che, Geneva′s representative for MATHCOUNTS, put it: "Geneva has supported STEM education in Beaver Valley through years of hosting MATHCOUNTS."

The day′s events began at 9 a.m., when three tests were initiated: the sprint test, which comprises 30 problems in 40 minutes; the target round, which has eight problems, solved two at a time; and the team round, in which a single math problem is given to four-person teams, one from each participating school.

The results were tallied over lunch, and the top 10 individual scorers were pitted against each other in a countdown round, where competitors raced against time and each other to solve math problems first. The four best scores moved forward to the state competition, along with the best team from the earlier challenge.

"Geneva students help out at different parts-they collect tests, they supply paper and pencils as needed, and they interact with competitors," added McCullough, showing his appreciation for their support.

Geneva College invites students to accept the challenge of an academically excellent, Christ-centered and affordable education. Offering nearly 40 undergraduate majors, Adult Degree Programs with fully online and campus-based options, and seven graduate degrees, programs are recognized for their high quality. U.S. News & World Report ranks Geneva as a Top 10 Best Value in the North Region with one of the Top 100 engineering programs in the nation. Adhering to the inerrancy of Scripture, a Geneva education is grounded in God′s word as well as in a core curriculum designed to prepare students vocationally to think, write and communicate well in today′s world.
