Bluffton, OH- Geneva Volleyball started its season in style, in back-to-back games finishing with back-to-back wins. The Golden Tornadoes defeated both Denison (25-20, 25-23, 25-23) and Albion (25-20, 25-19, 25-19) this evening at the Bluffton University Volleyball Tournament in three sets a piece.
Co-head coach, Curt Conser commented, "Wendy and I felt with young players and new positions tonight couldn′t have gone much better." "We still have improvements to make but we had a great team effort with many people involved today."
Erica Hughes (North Jackson, OH/Jackson Milton) developed into the offensive freshman stand out against Denison leading the team in Kills with 17. McKala King (Uniontown, OH/Lake) returns as Geneva′s defensive specialist, gathering 14 digs in the tight three set win.
In game two, Hughes continued leading the offense with a team high of nine kills supported by senior middle blocker Erin Smith (Sewickley, PA/Ambridge) with eight kills. Against the Albion Britons, Alexis Ritson (Irwin, PA/Hempfield) worked for 16 digs on the defensive side of the ball for the GTs.
"Netherland, Smith and Aldridge really came alive at the end of game three again Albion. After a timeout focused on our blocking game, we were thrilled to see seven of the ten blocks in that set come from the last couple minutes of play. It was certainly a highlight to get seven blocks in that set" said Conser.
Geneva steps back on the volleyball court tomorrow for another double header at the Bluffton Tournament starting at noon against Heidelberg and finishing against host Bluffton at 2 p.m.
