Mistakes send Geneva football to eighth straight road loss 22-21 at CMU

GenC91314274.jpgPittsburgh, PA- Mistakes by the freshmen who carried the Golden Tornadoes the first few weeks proved to be too much for Geneva to overcome, falling to Carnegie Mellon 22-21. Geneva falls to 1-3, 0-2 in the Presidents′ Athletic Conference and lost its eighth straight road game. CMU improves to 1-2, 1-1.

Geneva started out strong as freshman Aaron Channing (Horsham, PA/Hatboro-Horsham) led the Golden Tornadoes right down the field on their first possession. Geneva marched 72 yards in eight plays with Channing passing to Josh Guiser (Sr., Fayette City, PA/Frazier) for a 15-yard scoring play. That, however, would be Geneva′s final score until CMU had scored 22 unanswered points.

The teams went to halftime tied 7-7 but Carnegie Mellon struck first in the second half as Andrew Hearon threw his second touchdown pass of the game, this one to Garrett Strobel of 23 yards. Geneva was driving for an answer when Channing′s pass was tipped into the hands of Vince Dimarchi for an 84-yard interception return for a score. Channing had thrown 134 passes before the interception and finished the day with 239 yards passing.

On the ensuing kickoff, Geneva freshman Nate Cannon (Palm Beach Gardens, FL/Kings Academy), who had intercepted four passes and returned a punt for a score in the first three games, was stripped. CMU recovered and responded with a 24-yard field goal by Tyler Kohman to increase the lead to 22-7. Geneva′s comeback chances suffered a blow when Channing was shaken up and did not return but freshman Nick Cook (Walnutport, PA/Northampton) came off the bench and engineered a scoring drive, passing to Lemuel Fuller (Jr., Forest Park, GA/Forest Park) for a score. The two-point conversion pass fell incomplete and Geneva′s next drive was stopped by an interception.

Geneva also scored on its last possession as Cook threw to Jeff Clegg (Fr., North Jackson, OH/Western Reserve) for 19-yard score and Cook passed to Ryan Mosura (Fr., Masury, OH/Brookfield) for the two -point conversion but all that did was change the final score.

Geneva sophomore Jon Fiscus (Freedom, PA/Freedom) led a solid defensive effort with 10 tackles and an interception.

Geneva has a bye week next week before hosting Thomas More on October 11 for homecoming at 2 p.m.
