After trailing 33-31 at the half, the Geneva men exploded for 47 points in the second half and defeated Washington & Jefferson 78-70 to improve to 6-8 overall and 3-2 in Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) play. This is the latest in the season Geneva has had a winning conference record since joining the PAC in 2011-12.

Junior Ethan Adamczyk and sophomore Chaese Vaudrin, both from Uniontown, OH/Lake, each scored 12 points after intermission as Adamczyk finished with 20 and Vaudrin 14. Junior Jordan Lawrence (Columbia, MD/Chapelgate) added 11.

“We didn’t play with any emotion in the first half,” said Geneva coach Jeff Santarsiero. “We picked it up in the second half, made some stops defensively and showed more patience on offense.

“That was the key.”

In the second half, there were two ties and two lead changes before Adamczyk’s layup with 14:31 left put the Golden Tornadoes ahead 43-42 to stay. Geneva would twice push the lead to 10 points but, each time, W&J pushed back and fought hard until the end.

After missing nine of their first 11 free throws against Penn State-Altoona Monday night, the Golden Tornadoes regained their form and made 21 of 24.

“We made our free throws this game, that was a key,” Santarsiero said. “We have to learn to play better with a lead but we’re still young and playing freshmen and transfers in key spot.

“We’ve been playing a lot of games even though we’re on academic break. It will do us good to get a week off before the trip to Kentucky.”

Geneva will enjoy a full week off before visiting Thomas More (KY) next Wednesday.
