First half W&J run too much for Geneva women, fall to Presidents, 88-64

WASHINGTON, PA - Washington & Jefferson had a run of 15 straight points in the first half, extending a 9-8 lead to 24-8 and, although Geneva cut the deficit to five points, the Golden Tornadoes got no closer. W& J extended the lead in the second half, building to an 88-64 loss for the Golden Tornadoes.

“We’re a young team – a bunch of freshmen and sophomores with one junior and one senior,” said Geneva coach Lori Wynn. “We are not a good defensive team right now and that is reflective of the fact that we’re so young. It doesn’t surprise me, but it does drive me nuts.”

“We just keep pushing them and we are getting better.”

The lone bright spot for the Golden Tornadoes was that four players scored in double figures, led by sophomore Miranda Heaney (New Castle, PA/Union) with 16 points. Sophomore Nicole Hyland (Trafford, PA/Penn-Trafford) and junior Heidi Mann (Colorado Springs, CO/Evangelical Christian Academy) each had 13 and freshman Lydia Songer (Wexford, PA/Pine-Richland) had 12.

Mann continued her quest to reach the 1,000 part mark and now has 923, five points behind Tricia Martin (1975-79) in 13th place on Geneva’s career scoring list.

Geneva, now 4-16 and 2-11 in Presidents’ Athletic Conference play, will host Grove City Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
