Fort Pierce, FL – Geneva’s bats came alive after its day off Wednesday by sweeping Hilbert College 8-7 followed by a 20-3 victory.

Donnie Tong (Columbus, OH/Tree of Life Christian) was the first to tally a hit with a single to left field in the top of the first. Tong was batted in by Ryan McGonigle (Vandergrift, PA/Apollo Ridge) who also crossed the plate in the first inning off Aaron Witman’s (Greencastle, PA/Shalom Christian Academy) double to center field.

After a quiet second inning the offense picked up again in the third. Tyler Damazo (Beaver Falls, PA/Blackhawk) opened up the inning with a single, McGonigle singled, and a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly by Witman later, Damazo scored. McGonigle scored on a single by Dan Jeffreys (Moon Twp, PA/Moon) and a double to left field by Anthony Marteparte (Latrobe, PA/Latrobe) increased the lead to 5-0. The rally continued with singles by Shane Wingard (Clarksburg, PA/Apollo Ridge) and Andy Santana (San Pedro de Marcoris, DR/Desert Christian) singled. Tong's second hit of the day drove home two more to increase the lead to 8-0, enough top withstand late Hilbert rallies of four runs in the sixth inning and three in the seventh. Jeff Parker (Green Brook, NJ/Timothy Christian) got his second win of the season striking out six batters.

In the nightcap, Geneva ensured there would be no threat of a comeback by Hilbert. Zach Ackerman (Lewis Center, OH/Worthington Christian) earned the win, striking out seven batters. Geneva’s offense put together eight runs in the first three innings.

Jeffreys, Monteparte, JC Ackerman (Lewis Center, OH/Worthington Christian), Santana and Damazo all made big plays to put Geneva up on the scoreboard early.

Head Coach Alan Sumner commented, “We had great starting pitching from Jeff and Zach.”

“Offensively we did a good job hitting line drives and taking advantage of scoring opportunities.”

The Golden Tornadoes are back in action tomorrow March 12 against Kenyon College for a single nine inning game starting at 9 a.m.
