Geneva’s threats fall short in game two

gt baseball

Beaver Falls, PA – Thursday Geneva held the leading conference offense, Thomas More, to a three run game, tying the lowest offensive game the Saints have had this season. The weather forced the Golden Tornadoes and the Saints to wait until this afternoon (April 4, 2015) to finish their second seven inning doubleheader game and a single nine inning game. The Saints who had been in town since Wednesday evening didn’t waste any time when the sun came out. Thomas More defeated Geneva 12-4 in seven innings during Saturday’s first game. Game two was a different story. Geneva earned ten runs in the nine innings but fell short 12-10. The ten runs are the most Thomas More has allowed during conference play, the third time this season the double digits have been breached on the opponent’s side of the scoreboard.

The two losses lower the GT’s overall record to 8-12, 2-5 in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference. Thomas More remains at the top of league, 9-0, 17-3 overall.

The Saint’s 12-4 win was started in the first scoring two runs on two singles. The lead would stay with Thomas More for the rest of the game. Three of the 11 Saint hits went beyond the fence. Home runs for Thomas More from Donovan Pogue in the third inning, Ben Kenning in the fourth inning and Bailey Abbatiello in the fifth.

Geneva’s runs came from Ryan McGonigle’s (Vandergrift, PA/Apollo Ridge) singe rbi in the first and Zach Ackerman (Lewis Center, OH/Worthington Christian) three rbi day; a two rbi single in the fourth and a rbi single hit in the sixth.

Jeff Parker (Green Brook, NJ/Timothy Christian) took the loss after Thomas More’s offense earned nine runs in four innings.

Geneva’s ten run nine inning game came from a five run push in the eighth. Facing a seven run deficit with two outs, two errors setup single rbis by Andy Santanta (San Pedro de Marcoris, DR/Desert Christian), Tyler Damazo (Beaver Falls, PA/Blackhawk) and Ryan McGonigle (Vandergrift, PA/Apollo Ridge) for the 12-8 rally. Aaron Witman (Greencastle, PA/Shalom Christian Academy) reached on an error by the third baseman keeping the inning alive. Anthony Monteparte (Latrobe, PA/Latrobe) two rbi single to center field brought home Damazo and McGonigle for the Golden Tornadoes’ tenth run.

The gap proved the be too much for the Golden Tornadoes handing Caleb Metzler (Lititz, PA/Warwick) the loss.

Geneva will enjoy celebrating the Easter Holiday and will be back in baseball action April 8 at Grove City College in a single nine inning game starting at 4 p.m.
