Ninth inning blues - Grove City’s late two runs lifts above GTs, 3-1

Beaver Falls, PA – Despite the rain in Beaver Falls early Wednesday afternoon, the Geneva and Grove City softball teams out waited the weather to fit in one of the games in their scheduled doubleheader before the sun went down. Grove City’s two run ninth inning overcame Geneva’s comeback efforts in a 3-1 final. The extra inning loss lowers Geneva’s overall record to 13-12, 3-2 in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference.

Grove City earned its first run in the second in a homer by senior catcher Sarah Morris.

The one run would haunt the Golden Tornadoes until the bottom of the sixth when junior first baseman Laura Beck (Canfield, OH / Canfield) tripled to right field followed by a sacrifice fly rbi to center field by senior designated hitter Andy Hinds (Montrose, PA / Montrose).

With the game tied at 1-1 the scoreless seventh created an extra inning ball game that wouldn’t fare well for the Golden Tornadoes.

Geneva left two on base in the eighth, leaving the doors open for the Wolverines.

Sophomore Katie Watts had an rbi single for Grove City in the ninth for the 3-1 final.

Junior pitcher Samantha Johnson worked all nine innings. She took the loss despite only giving up four hits, four walks while striking out five.

Head Coach Van Zanic commented, “We can’t expect to win games 1-0. When you don’t score runs you aren’t going to win games in this conference.”

Saturday April 11 Geneva is scheduled to host Saint Vincent in a doubleheader at 1 p.m.

Geneva and Grove City will reschedule their second game at a later date to be announced.
