Geneva gets off to sluggish start, can’t recover in 52-21 loss to Frostburg

gt footballBEAVER FALLS-When Geneva visited Frostburg State last year to open the season, the game was plagued by lightning delays. The same thing happened this year at Beaver Falls but the play of the game never recovered for the home team.
Geneva gave up a safety and a touchdown in the game’s first eight plays and trailed 18-0 after the first quarter. By halftime, the deficit had risen to 35-0 and, although Geneva cut the deficit in the second half to the final 32-point margin, the outcome of the game was never in doubt after the opening minutes.

The 52 points allowed by Geneva were the most in a season opener since a 56-53 loss to Frostburg in 2012.

Geneva’s three touchdowns were all scored by relative newcomers. Sophomore Jared Hogue (Freedom) scored the first TD on a 22-yard interception return. The second was score by junior wide receiver Colton Booher (Jefferson Hills/Thomas Jefferson), who switched back to wide receiver after spending last season in the defensive backfield. The final score came on a 1-yard sneak by freshman quarterback Javid Ellis (Port St. Lucie, FL/Saint Lucie West Centennial).
Geneva travels to Grove City next Saturday.
