Geneva men’s soccer stays unbeaten with late rally

It was a good night for Beaver County Christian School graduates as Abel Carleton and Gib McCracken, both sophomores, provided valuable contributions as Geneva College edged Allegheny 3-2 on the road, scoring in the final minute and a half.

Geneva improved its record to 3-0-1 with the win.

“Anytime you win on the road in the middle of the week, it’s a good win,” said Geneva head coach Gary Dunda. “The team showed a lot of grit and character in recording the win.”

The first half was scoreless but Geneva corrected that situation quickly. Carleton scored first on an assist from senior captain Kyle Terrill (Kiski Area/Apollo, PA) and sophomore Josh Brenize (Chambersburg, PA) doubled the margin shortly thereafter with an assist from junior Jonathan Shoaf (Virginia Beach, VA/Norfolk Christian).

“We played great in the first five minutes of the second half,” said Dunda. “But we left off the gas a little and Allegheny came back to tie it up.

“Then with about a minute and a half left, we scored to get the lead. Gib went up for a header and the ball went in. There was no doubt the ball went in the goal but they recorded it as an “own goal.” We’ll have to look at the tape to see if Gib touched it.”

Regardless of how the final goal is recorded, though, it represented a win for Geneva.

The Golden Tornadoes will continue on the road Saturday, visiting Lycoming at 2:00 Saturday.
