Latrobe, PA – The Geneva women volleyball Golden Tornadoes earned their 17th straight win on Saturday at Saint Vincent. The GTs defeated Waynesburg in Latrobe 3-0 (25-13, 25-16, 25-21), then defeated Saint Vincent 3-0 (25-18, 25-16, 25-14).

The pair of wins raises Geneva’s overall record to 17-1, a perfect 7-0 in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference. The 17 straight wins is the second longest in any sport in the 126-year history of athletics at Geneva. The only longer streak was the men’s basketball team’s 19-game streak in 1992-93.

Geneva has only dropped a single set – to Bethany on September 9 - since their season opener loss at Mt. Union.

“Our offense has been really effective, efficient and aggressive,” said co-head coach Curt Conser. “We saw that continue today.”

Erica Hughes (North Jackson, OH/Jackson Milton) led the offense in game one against the Yellow Jackets with 14 kills in 21 swings, giving up only one error (.619).

Marissa Naples (Cortland, OH/Lakeview) was an effective with a .462 hitting percentage earning six kills in 13 swings without committing any errors. In addition, Naples contributed 24 assists.

Rachel Netherland (Aliquippa, PA/Central Valley) set up the offense with 30 assists. She also tallied three kills or her own, six digs and a block.

Olivia Test (Negley, OH/Heartland Christian) protected the net with five blocks while earning seven kills.

On defense, Gabrielle Dickson (Brookfield, OH/Kennedy Catholic) worked for 17 digs. McKala King (Uniontown, OH/Lake) earned 15 digs in the defensive effort.

“Saint Vincent has a lot of height on their team in certain positions so that gave us a different look than other opponents,” said Conser.

“It made for a fun and competitive match.”

Hughes also led the Geneva offense in game two against Saint Vincent with 12. She also earned three blocks in the win.

Naples grabbed seven kills and 12 assists.

Netherland racked up 30 assists, three kills, six digs and a block.

Test finished game two with six kills and three blocks while Hayes earned nine kills.

Dickson collected a team high 19 digs with King also adding 15 digs to Geneva’s count.

Rachel Tuck (Burke, VA/Lake Braddock Secondary School) also hit nine kills in 17 attempts giving up only one error (.471) over Saint Vincent.

“Our offense averaged over 16 kills per set today and that not all the credit goes to our hitters. They couldn't have that kind of success without our serve receivers, setters, and defenders doing their jobs,” Conser said. "Our defenders at the net and in the backcourt have been working extremely hard and as a result we lead the league in opponent hitting percentage."

Wednesday, October 7 Geneva travels to Westminster for a 7 p.m. game then hosts a tri-match at Metheny Fieldhouse Saturday, October 10.
