Geneva women’s soccer offensive surge continues at Waynesburg in 3-2 final

Waynesburg, PA –Heidi Mann’s (Colorado Springs, CO/Evangelical Christian Academy) game winning header goal off a Megan Schoeneweis (Moon, PA/Moon) corner kick broke a five year losing record to the Waynesburg Yellow Jackets Friday night. The 3-2 final lifts Geneva’s overall record 6-6, 2-3 in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference.

“Glad to get the win in a hard fought battle with Waynesburg,” said head coach Linda Sumner.

Heidi Mann took a deflection off the Yellow Jacket goalkeeper to put Geneva on the scoreboard in the first nine minutes of the game.

Kimberly Orihel (Green, OH/Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy) scored her ninth goal of the season handing Geneva the two goal lead at the half.

Yellow Jacket Melanie Byler closed the gap for Waynesburg with goals in the 48th and 80th minutes of the game.

With time running down, freshmen forward, Megan Schoeneweis took Geneva’s corner where Mann connected with a header for the win.

Senior goalkeeper Anna McMullen (Uniontown, OH/Lake Center Christian) earned eight saves in the win.

“She fought hard,” said Sumner.

Wednesday, October 21 the Golden Tornadoes return to action at home against Bethany (4:30 p.m.).
