George YanceyProfessor of sociology and author Dr. George Yancey will be speaking at Geneva College on Wednesday, November 18 at 7 p.m. as part of the Geneva Visiting Artist and Lecture Series (GVALS). He will present "Christianophobia in the United States" in Skye Lounge of the Student Center.

Hostile EnvironmentYancey has written a number of books based on his studies of American anti-Christian attitudes. These include Hostile Environment: Understanding and Responding to Anti-Christian Bias; Compromising Scholarship: Religious and Political Bias in American Higher Education; and Dehumanizing Christians: Cultural Competition in a Multicultural World.  

A professor at the University of North Texas, Yancey is currently working to establish a program for Christian studies there. His desire is to found the first center to concentrate on conducting critical research that helps Christians to better serve their communities and the larger society.

After graduating from West Texas State University with a B.S. in Economics, Yancey earned his Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Texas at Austin. He began teaching at the University of North Texas in 1999 and started his academic career studying interracial romance and multiracial churches before focusing on academic bias and anti-Christian attitudes.

"Christianophobia in the United States" is free and open to the public.

Dr. Yancey’s lecture is part of the Iva E. Patterson and Dale W. Gilmore Visiting Artist and Lecture Series endowed by Paul H. Gilmore ’31.
