Music Major Auditions in February

Picture of Music Major Auditions in February

High school and transfer students who are interested in majoring in music, music education or music business at Geneva College must audition for acceptance to the Music Department, as well as for available music scholarships. For those who plan on enrolling at Geneva for the fall 2016 semester, on-campus auditions will take place on Saturday, February 20 and Saturday, February 27, 2016.

Available music scholarships range from $500-$3,000 a year. These awards are renewable each year for four years, as long as the student remains a music major and maintains good academic standing.

For the audition, each applicant performs two separate works, with a maximum total time of 12 minutes. The works are to be performed on the instrument with which a student plans to have as his or her concentration. Repertoire guidelines are at www.geneva.edu/dept/music/music_audition_guidelines.

A personal accompanist is allowed, or Geneva can provide one as long as a copy of the music is sent to the college two weeks before the audition date.

A written questionnaire and aural evaluation are also part of the audition. Applicants are evaluated on the fundamentals of music theory, which includes musical notation, triads, scales, rhythm and meter, sight reading, and pitch recognition.

A recommendation from either a high school teacher or professional musician is also required.

Students who apply to Geneva after the February audition dates must contact the Music Department to schedule an audition to be accepted into the department. However, scholarship awards may no longer be available for the first year after these dates have passed.

Acceptance to Geneva through the regular admissions process and the appropriate financial aid forms must be completed before any award becomes official. The music scholarship application can be found at www.geneva.edu/dept/music/music_audition_info.

Students who are unable to attend an on-campus audition may contact the Music Department at 724-847-6660 or dbk@geneva.edu for details about submitting an audition DVD by February 20, 2016.
