Revised SAT Begins March 2016

Picture of Revised SAT Begins March 2016

High school juniors and seniors may be interested in key content changes that the College Board has made to the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT). Administering of the revised SAT will be in March 2016.

Major changes include replacing little-known vocabulary with important, widely used words and phrases. Multiple choice questions now have four options, instead of five. The time required for the exam is increased on all sections of the test, including a doubling of the limit for the essay. And the exam now has 16 fewer questions.

In addition, the essay section is now optional. Those who choose to complete essay will have this section scored separately from two to eight on each of three dimensions.

Test content is also revised. The math section of the SAT previously focused heavily on geometry and shapes, but now includes more data interpretation and graphs. The reading section previously focused on vocabulary and correctly completing sentences, but now includes more evidence support and data reasoning. The writing section, which in the past primarily tested individual sentences and grammatical rules, now has more passage-based questions.

Previously, students were heavily penalized for guessing incorrectly on the exam and were advised to only answer questions when confident. Now, students simply earn points for questions answered correctly and are encouraged to provide a best answer for every question.

The SAT scoring scale, which was 600-2400, is now 400-1600. The scale ranges from 200 to 800 for evidence-based reading and writing, and 200 to 800 for math.
