Beaver Falls, PA – Down to the wire, Geneva held on to defeat Thiel 81-79, marking a 2-0 season record over the Tomcats. The Golden Tornadoes would outscore the Tomcats in three of the four quarters pulling their record to 8-9 overall and 5-5 President’s Athletic Conference (PAC).

“We shot really well tonight creating a lot of good opportunities on offense,” said head coach Lori Wynn. “However we need to be more disciplined on defense.”

Thiel opened up scoring with back to back three-pointers to take the lead.  They pulled the lead to ten before junior Miranda Heaney (New Castle PA/Union) drained a three-pointer. Heaney finished 4-7 beyond the arch contributing to her 16 points in the game. The Tornadoes tied up the game three times until freshmen Jodie Carlton (Warsaw, IN/Warsaw) gave Geneva its first lead change with two good free throws.

Geneva opened scoring in the second quarter with a layup by junior Nicole Hyland (Trafford, PA/Penn Trafford). Sophomore Lydia Songer’s (Wexford PA/Pine Richland) back-to-back three-pointers created the biggest lead of the game for either team at 17 points. Freshman Callie Ford (New Middletown, OH/Springfield Local) was a strong contributor with 16 points in the game, 14 points coming from the first half.

Thiel depleted Geneva’s margin lead to 46-40 by the half.

The Tomcats brought the game close with a lead change late in the fourth but the Golden Tornadoes held on for the victory after Ford completed two good free throws.

“At the end of the game we did what we needed to do to win.” said Wynn.

Senior Heidi Mann (Colorado Springs, CO/Evangelical Christian Academy) led Geneva’s second half offense with 13 points in the half. Mann racked up 21 points over Thiel.

Geneva shot at 80 percent from the free throw line and 66.7 percent from the arc.

The Golden Tornadoes return to action at home Wednesday, January 27 against the Bethany Bison.
