The Genevans Feature “Forget Not All His Benefits” This Spring

Beaver Falls

The Genevans, student choir of Geneva College, feature the program “Forget Not All His Benefits.” The ensemble will perform at venues across the northeastern United States for its 2016 spring concert season.

The Genevans’ spring tour begins and ends in Pittsburgh, with two performances one month apart. The Genevans will visit the Reformed Presbyterian Home on Wednesday, March 2 and the First Presbyterian Church of Pittsburgh on Saturday, April 2.

During the choir’s five-day bus tour from March 4-8, The Genevans will perform in Williamsport, PA; Long Island, NY; Clementon, NJ; and Bryn Mawr, PA.

In addition, the ensemble will appear in Geneva College’s John White Chapel for its annual home concerts at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, March 18 and Saturday, March 19.

Two new compositions highlight The Genevans’ 78th concert season. One is a motet on Psalm 103 composed by junior communication major Michael Kearney of Mount Sinai, NY. The other is Geneva professor Dr. Byron Curtis’ anthem “The Rebel Guest,” which was commissioned for The Genevans by Jim and Doris Miller.

During intermissions, concertgoers will enjoy performances by the Grace Notes, a women’s ensemble, and the Eight Bells, a double barbershop quartet.

Taking his cue from the first line of Psalm 103, conductor Dr. David Kenneth Smith assembled The Genevans’ spring 2016 program by selecting works that proclaim God’s innumerable gifts of grace to mankind. Dr. Smith comments, “It’s been intriguing to hunt for music that highlights crucial biblical passages on grace, and then so exciting see choir members appropriate the Word in their own lives. What a great privilege to work with such deep texts and wonderful students! I look forward to inviting our audiences into this experience.”

Founded in 1938, The Genevans choir continues a rich heritage of choral singing dating from the early years of the college over a century and a half ago. The mission of The Genevans expresses Geneva’s belief that music, as one of God’s finest gifts, meets a deep, universal need in people. The choir’s broad repertoire reflects the belief that all of life is lived in God’s presence.
