Ruby Shuttlesworth Bester to Speak at Geneva

Civil Rights Movement

In observance of Black History Month, Geneva College’s Center for Student Engagement will host Ruby Shuttlesworth Bester on campus. She will share her story of growing up during the Civil Rights Movement on Tuesday, February 23 at 7:30 p.m. and on Wednesday, February 24 at 9 a.m. Both appearances will be in Skye Lounge of the Student Center.

Ruby Shuttlesworth Bester

Bester is the daughter of Frederick Lee "Fred" Shuttlesworth, a Civil Rights activist who led the fight against segregation and other forms of racism as a minister in Birmingham, Alabama. Shuttlesworth worked with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., co-founded of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, and initiated the 1963 Birmingham Campaign.

The Bester family faced great opposition as a result of taking action against rampant racial injustice. Their house was bombed when Bester was 11, and her father was beaten after he and his wife attempted to enroll their children in an all-white segregated high school.

Bester served as an educator in Cincinnati, Ohio, for 30 years.
