Geneva Softball Starts Strong with 7-1 Win over Elms; Drops Second Game to Marian

Naples, FL –Geneva’s 13 hits handed the Golden Tornadoes a 7-1 win over Elms (MA) Wednesday morning. Geneva’s strong start didn’t last the whole day as the GTs dropped a 13-6 decision to Marian (WI).

The split brings Geneva’s overall record to 2-2.

“This was a very complete team win,” said head coach Van Zanic, after the first game. “It is an example of what we can be when we play sound defense.”

“Emily was outstanding.”

Geneva's starting freshman pitcher Emily Keslar (Mt. Pleasant, PA/Connellsville) started day two of 2016 with seven strike outs while surrendering only one run.

After earning a one run edge over Elms in the bottom of the fifth, Geneva ensured the win with five runs on six hits in the sixth.

Taylor Yarletts (New Castle, PA/Mohawk) scored Geneva’s first run in the third, scoring on a two-out, bases loaded single by Clara Sevy (Sykesville, MD/Chapelgate Christian) to center field, bringing in Yarletts.

Elms tied the game in the fourth but a single by Lucia Fee (Wampum, PA/Mohawk) scored Haley Sainato (New Castle, PA/Mohawk) to give Geneva a 2-1 lead.

Sainato doubled to left field in the sixth, bringing in Yarletts and Laura Innocenzi (Cortland, OH/Lakeview).

Geneva faced Marian in game two at the North Collier Regional Park, in another back and forth game.

Marian scored first but Geneva answered with two on Fee’s RBI single before Marian scored four runs in the second. Geneva’s offensive capitalized on two wild pitches and a passed ball to tie the game at five runs each by the end of the inning.

Marian edged Geneva with a run in the third, 6-5 but a Yarletts single RBI to right field in the sixth brought in Fee, who opened the inning with a single to center field, to tie the game at six.

Geneva’s hopes faded fast as Marian rallied seven runs at the top of the sixth inning.

Keslar, now 2-2, struck out two in her 5.2 innings of work.

“I was proud of how we battled back like we did Monday,” said Zanic. “We need to figure out how to lower Emily’s pitch count. They capitalized on our defensive errors.”

“After two days I am very positive of where we can go.”

Friday, March 11 Geneva returns to North Collier Regional Park for a 1 p.m. game against Salem State University and a 3 p.m. game facing Northland College.
