Business Philosopher Dr. Gregory R. Beabout to Speak

Bitar Lecture Series

Dr. Gregory R. Beabout Dr. Gregory R. Beabout will speak at Geneva College on Wednesday, April 13 and Thursday, April 14, 2016 as part of the Dr. Byron I. Bitar Memorial Lecture in Philosophy. Dr. Beabout will present two public lectures during his time at Geneva.

The first presentation, “‘Business Humanities’? What Future Leaders Can Learn about Character-Transforming Arguments from MacIntyre, Kierkegaard, and the Ancient Greeks,” is on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in John White Chapel of Old Main. A question and answer session will follow.

Attendees can purchase Dr. Beabout’s books throughout the evening.

The second lecture, “From Office Executive to Wise Steward: The Place of Practical Wisdom in the Manager’s Art,” is on Thursday at 7:30 p.m., also in John White Chapel. A question and answer session and book-signing reception will follow.

Dr. Beabout teaches and conducts research in ethics, Kierkegaard, personalism and Catholic social thought. His work is informed by his engagement with the history of philosophy and involves applying personalism and the tradition of the virtues to business and the professions. He received his Bachelor of Arts in Theology from Loyola University, and then continued his education with a Ph.D. in Philosophy from Marquette University.

Dr. Michael J. Ophardt will serve as Respondent to Dr. Beabout’s lectures. Dr. Ophardt is the Chair of the Department of Business and Professor of Business Ethics at Malone University. He earned his Ph.D. in Philosophy at Duquesne University in 1992.

The Dr. Byron I. Bitar Memorial Lecture in Philosophy is endowed by the William C. Kriner Family in memory of Geneva College′s beloved professor of a quarter-century, in order to continue his legacy and vision for philosophy. The Lecture was inaugurated in 2004, a year after Dr. Bitar′s untimely death.
