Beaver Falls, PA – Geneva softball split with the Thiel Tomcats, dropping a 6-3 game one decision, then winning game two, 6-4. The doubleheader ended the Golden Tornadoes’ 2016 season finishing 17-19, 6-12 in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference.

Clara Sevy (Sykesville, MD / Chapelgate Christian) opened up game one’s scoring with a RBI double bringing home Dayna Hicks (Beaver Falls, PA / Blackhawk).

Thiel leveled the scoreboard in the fourth at 1-1. Neither team’s offense could generate runs, forcing extra innings. Thiel’s five run rally in the top of the eighth inning rally were better than Geneva’s two run effort on a home run by Ashley Grow (Beaver, OH / Waverly).

In game two, Geneva was behind until the sixth inning when the Golden Tornadoes worked for back-to-back scoring innings to end the season with a win.

Lucia Fee (Wampum, PA / Mohawk) started the late fireworks in the fifth with a two-run single.

In the sixth, after Hannah Logan (Pittsburgh, PA / Avonworth) walked, a two-run error scored Logan and Laura Beck (Canfield, OH / Canfield).

After Beck crossed home plate, Hicks finished the senior day right, driving in the winning run to give the Geneva the lead for good.

“It seems like just yesterday that Laura and Dayna stepped onto Geneva’s campus,” said head coach Van Zanic. “It has been an exciting ride over the last four years. From getting the opportunity to play in two PAC championship games to stepping up as leaders with a young group of players, they have been all I could have asked for throughout their careers. They are both very talented players on the field but more importantly, they are amazing young ladies off the field.

“As much as any players I have coached over the years, Laura and Dayna both understood me as well as any of them. They always knew my expectations and they always were willing to do whatever it took for us be successful. I will personally miss them terribly but they have left a legacy of leadership that they can be proud of for years to come.”
