Geneva Receives Fulbright Grant to Host Nigerian Scholar

Fulbright

Geneva College received a grant through the Fulbright Scholarship-in-Residence program to bring Nigerian scholar Dr. Cephas Tushima for the 2016-17 academic year. Crossroads: Geneva’s Center for Enriched Learning initiated the process to bring Tushima to campus, and he is the first Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence that the college has had in its more-than-160-year history.

Cephas TushimaTushima is Deputy Provost of Academic Affairs and Associate Professor of Biblical Studies at Jos ECWA Theological Seminary, Nigeria. He is the co-author of The Fate of Saul's Progeny in The Reign of David (Pickwick Publications, 2011). Tushima recently presented “Ethical Dimensions of Succession Politics: A Critical Analysis of Davidic Hesed in 2 Samuel 9” at the Society for Biblical Literature Conference.

While visiting Geneva, Dr. Tushima will teach classes, consult on curriculum, provide advice regarding global student recruitment and global student services efforts. He will also speak at local churches and engage with community groups during his time here.  In addition, Dr. Tushima plans to continue work on his book about women in leadership.

“I’m thrilled that a Christian scholar of Dr. Tushima’s caliber will be joining us under the Fulbright Program,” said Dr. Jeffrey Cole, Director of Crossroads: Geneva’s Center for Enriched Learning. “His faith commitment, academic interests and expertise in a variety of areas make him a good fit for Geneva.”

Tushima was born in Jato-Aka, Nigeria. He received his bachelor’s degree at the University of Jos and his master’s in biblical studies at ECWA Theological Seminary. Dr. Tushima earned a Ph.D. from Westminster Theological Seminary, where he studied hermeneutics and biblical interpretation.

Through the Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence Program, U.S. colleges and universities collaborate with scholars from other countries to assist in internationalizing U.S. campuses, curriculum and communities. Fulbright S-I-Rs teach primarily on the undergraduate level in their areas of expertise and provide a cross-cultural or international perspective to promote curriculum and program development. This is a program of the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.
