Geneva College Supports Refugee Care & Ministry Conference

BEAVER FALLS, Pa., August 30, 2016 – Geneva College today announces the Mobilizing Churches in Refugee Care & Ministry Conference to be held on Friday, September 16, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Allegheny Center Alliance Church (ACAC) in Pittsburgh. The conference is a National Welcoming Week event for the city of Pittsburgh and Allegheny County.

Conference organizers hope to educate church leaders about the needs of refugees and resettlement; discuss ways churches can help; and provide opportunities for collaboration and networking for refugee care and ministry.

Dr. Cathy Sigmund, Professor of Psychology, Counseling and Human Services at Geneva College and Chaplain at the Christian and Missionary Alliance says, “The issue of refugees has become a political one, but at its heart are hurting and vulnerable people. That’s exactly where the church needs to be – ministering to people who need help in the name of Jesus Christ. The Mobilizing Churches in Refugee Care & Ministry Conference is designed to equip the church and its leaders to fulfill this mission.”

H.E. Ernest Ndabashinze, ambassador to the U.S. from Burundi, will deliver the conference’s keynote address. Attendees will learn about refugee resettlement and services, hear from refugees and participate in a refugee camp and resettlement simulation. Each participant will receive a Geneva College Conference Certificate of Participation. Western PA District of the Christian & Missionary Alliance CEUs are also available.

The Conference will be held at the ACAC main building, lower level located at 250 E. Ohio St., Pittsburgh, PA 15212. Attendees are asked to enter through the parking lot. The conference is free and open to the public; however, registration is required to receive a participation certificate and lunch.
