Geneva Women’s Tennis 2016 Season Outlook

Geneva Women's Tennis

Things are looking up for the Geneva Women's Tennis program. Graduating only two of last season's seven starters and bringing in a handful of experienced freshmen, the Golden Tornadoes are ready for action.

"This is a tremendous group,” said 16 year head coach Mandee Craft. “We have three key starters back from last season, which is always huge. But on top of that, we also have a solid class of incoming freshmen."

The freshmen class Craft refers to includes Moon Area standout Rachael Letterman and Virginia Beach (Landstown) #1 singles player Grace Moyer, as well as Victoria Hinds, Jana Newberry and Isabella Condie, who will help provide added depth to a roster of 13.

"It's going to be an exciting season for sure. I can't wait to see what God has in store for this team, both on and off the court,” explained Craft. “It's always hard to lose a leader like Samm (Jensen) but with Megan (Shultz) as captain, we still have solid leadership. The PAC gets tougher every year, so time will tell if we will make a jump this year, but our line-up is solid." Shultz is a four year starter for Geneva and took home the PAC Championship as a junior at #5 singles.

One area that could prove to be a concern for the GT's is doubles. Craft continued, "We will most likely be putting out three brand new doubles teams this fall. Experience as partners is helpful but with this group I'm confident that any given pair could perform well when the season gets underway. It will just be a matter of determining who clicks as partners and whose games seem to complement each other's."

Geneva's home opener will be Thursday, September 1, at 4 p.m. at Brady's Run Park against Bethany.
