Volleyball Goes 4-0 This Weekend at Susquehanna; Raises Record to 7-5

Selinsgrove, PA – Geneva went 4-0 this weekend at the 2016 Hampton Inn River Hawk Classic handing the Golden Tornadoes a six game winning streak. On Friday, September 16, Geneva defeated Frostburg State University 3-0 (25-12, 25-13, 25-20) followed by a 3-0 (25-20, 25-20, 25-19) win against Geneseo College. Entering day two with an overall record to of 5-5, Geneva overcame the hosts, Susquehanna University, 3-2 (11-25, 25-19, 25-17, 19-25, 15-11). The Golden Tornadoes finished play against Nazareth College in four sets, 3-1 (25-12, 23-25, 25-11, 25-10). Now 7-5 overall, the weekend brings to a close a seven-match week for the Golden Tornadoes.

The tournament started off strong with a 3-0 win against Frostburg State University. Carolyn Kaufer (Albion, PA/Northwestern) led the team with eight kills. Olivia Test’s (Negley, OH/Heartland Christian) seven kills earned her a .583 hitting percentage for the game. Alaina Lytle (Warren, OH/Lakeview) led with 13 assists, Bailey McDonald (Amity, PA/Bishop Canevin) tight behind with a total of 11 assists. McKala King (Uniontown, OH/Lake) excelled on the defensive line, producing 15 digs and three service aces.

Geneva had another perfect game going 3-0 in game two against Geneseo College. Grace Hayes (Westminster, MD/Westminster) dominated at the net with 13 kills. Lytle contributed 25 assists. Gabrielle Dickson (Brookfield, OH/Kennedy Catholic) stood out on the defensive side, earning 18 digs for the game.

Day two of the tournament was a little more challenging but saw great success, earning the Golden Tornadoes two more wins to their record book. In the first game of the day, Geneva beat out Susquehanna University 3-2. Erica Hughes (North Jackson, OH/Jackson Milton) shone on the court earning 19 kills and three aces from the service line. Dickson also performed very well with three aces from the service line and 25 digs. Alaina Lytle earned a total of 38 assists.

In game two of the day, Geneva defeated Nazareth College in four sets. Marissa Naples (Cortland, OH/Lakeview) worked hard at the net earning 14 kills, quickly followed by Hughes’ 12 kills. Rachel Tuck (Burke, VA/Lake Braddock Secondary School) led the blocking for the game, earning four unassisted blocks and one solo block helped by Olivia Test with four assisted blocks. Lytle earned another 25 assists, giving her a total of 63 assists on the day.

Dickson was named all-tournament team for her work throughout the weekend. Test was also showcased as all-tournament team and the tournament's MVP.

The Golden Tornadoes return to the court on Wednesday, September 21 at Waynesburg University for a conference tri-match against Chatham University and the Yellow Jackets starting at 6 p.m. facing the Cougars.
