BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – Geneva College is hosting a conversation about “Christianity & the Global South” as part of the Geneva Visiting Artists and Lecture Series (GVALS) event on Monday, October 17, 2016 from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the McCartney Library.
The evening will feature a moderated discussion in which the panelists will provide descriptive, first-hand detail about the rise of evangelical Protestantism in Nigeria and Brazil, and, more broadly, Africa and South America. They will speak as scholars and churchmen, addressing concerns that are of interest to both the academy and the church. The moderator, Ron Morgan, is a professor of Latin American religious history and a former missionary in Brazil. He will direct questions to the panelists and will also reserve time for questions from the audience.
“This event gives Geneva the rare opportunity to connect itself in personal ways with fellow evangelicals from countries where Protestant churches are growing at historic rates,” says Dr. Eric Miller, Geneva professor of Humanities and History. “Having guests who will share personal stories, as well as expert analysis on such an important phenomenon will challenge us all in critical ways, I suspect.”
The guests include:
Pedro Feitoza is a Ph.D. candidate in History at the Emmanuel College, University of Cambridge. His research centers on Protestants and the public sphere in Brazil between 1870s-1960s.
Ronald Morgan, Ph.D. from the University of California at Santa Barbara, is Professor and Chair of the Department of History and Global Studies at Abilene Christian University. An Early Modernist with a focus on Latin American history, Ron and his wife Janine P. Morgan served for nine years as directors of ACU’s Study Abroad program in Oxford.
Henrique Alonso Pereira, Ph.D. from Pontificia Universidade Católica de São Paulo, is Professor of History at the Universidade Federal de Rio Grande do Norte (Brazil), who specializes in international relations and the Cold War. He served as a visiting professor or researcher at New York University, the Library of Congress, the University of Córdoba, the University of Paris, and the University of Maryland.
Cephas Tushima is Geneva’s first Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence. He comes from Jos, Nigeria, where he serves as Deputy Provost of Academic Affairs & Associate Professor of Biblical Studies at Jos ECWA (Evangelical Church Winning All) Theological Seminary.
