Event Features Original Literature and Music Performed by Students and Faculty

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – Geneva hosts the first Geneva Reading Series (GRS) of the semester on Wednesday, November 16, 2016 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. in McCartney Library.  The production, “Freedom,” promises students, faculty and staff an evening of unity, laughter and emotion.

Williams ArtEvent organizer Dr. Daniel Williams modeled GRS after a similar reading series that he attended weekly in Louisiana. Campus unity is the focus.  “Somebody said that laughter is medicine and an event like this where a lot of people get together from all over the campus is medicine too, for unity,” Dr. Williams says. “I want it to continue for that reason; because it’s fellowship.”

“God decided to reveal himself to us in words, and so where not every specialty belongs to all people; words belong to all people,” says Dr. Williams, who teaches English at Geneva.  “We are united in that way, and so, everybody can be touched by a poem or by an essay or some beautiful presentation by music.  Not necessarily everybody can get on-board with a beautiful equation or even understand it, but we come together through words.  I think that’s another reason why GRS has a chance to drive unity in a powerful way.”

The guests include:

Dr. Calvin L. Troup, the recently inaugurated 20th president of Geneva College.  He is a 1983 Geneva graduate, a former member of Genevans and a former Golden Tornadoes football player.

Dr. Daniel Williams, a full-time English professor at Geneva College and the mastermind behind the GRS.  He will be featured in the GRS introduction where he gives life to “conversations that deserve their place” and funny moments from both students and faculty.

Dr. Matthew Kickasola, a full-time music professor at Geneva College.  He says the thing he loves most about GRS is “the vulnerability of whoever’s reading” and the fact that “a community (can) spend two hours laughing together, crying together, going through that whole range of genuine emotion together…  It’s really a balm for this world.”

Dr. Kerry McMahon, a full-time professor of chemistry, math, and physics at Geneva College who will be performing 60s-style folk music on guitar, ukulele and mandolin.  His wife will accompany him as they sing original songs together.

Don Clark, a senior writing major and featured reader for GRS “Freedom.”  He will be reading original work.

Kaitlyn Orme, a senior history major and featured reader for GRS “Freedom.”  She will also be reading original work.
