Beaver Falls, PA – The Student Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC) is hosting their annual American Red Cross Blood Drive on Thursday, November 17 in the Merriam Gym on Geneva’s Campus from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. This year, the blood drive has 67 open donation slots including 10 slots to donate Power Red.

Power Red is a unique way to donate a concentrated dose of red blood cells, helping more patients in one appointment. These high concentrations of red blood cells are often used for trauma and surgery patients as well as those undergoing a battle with cancer. The requirements for a Power Red donation are higher than normal blood donations, with height and weight specifications for both males (5’1, 130 lbs) and females (5’5, 150 lbs). Stronger males have been known to qualify more easily and tend to be a better fit for Power Red donations.

Those who are interested in donating on Thursday, November 17 are encouraged to visit redcrossblood.org and enter: genevacollege to schedule an appointment.

On the day of the drive, those who have an appointment can save some time taking part in the American Red Cross RapidPass tool. Approximately 15 minutes can be saved by completing the pre-reading and donation questions online at any point the day of the drive. If a donor wishes to take part in RapidPass, they must bring either a printed copy of their pass or be able to display it on their phones at their appointment.

SAAC will be providing snacks and beverages to all those who donate to say thank you for helping make the Blood Drive a success.

Any questions about eligibility to donate can be directed to the American Red Cross either on the web at redcrossblood.org or by calling 1-800-RED CROSS.

“Geneva has become known as a reliable place to receive significance blood donations for the American Red Cross,” explains Christy Lear, Sports Information Director and SAAC Staff Advisor at Geneva College.

“I encourage the campus community (students, staff, facility and administration) in addition to the Beaver Falls community to look into their ability to donate and schedule an appointment online. Since the American Red Cross is preparing for 67 slots to donate blood, I would like nothing more than to fill each and every slot for this tremendous cause.”

SAAC is also looking for volunteers to help run the drive. If interested, contact Christy Lear by email at cllear@geneva.edu or by phone at 724-561-6232.

“The American Red Cross needs five people at all times to help keep the day moving smoothly. Every part of this donation day helps the cause - including volunteering to the staff the event.”
